Killer Robots: Should AI be used in wars?

In war it makes sense to keep more soldiers out of harm’s way-this means our future will be filled with autonomous weapons- tools that can select and target specific humans, even without human oversight. With discoveries such as killer drones used by the American military to carry out assassinations, it begs the questions – is it  ethical to use AI robots in war ? The primary reason against the use of AI in war is that  a robot cannot deliberate or feel the weight of the decision to take a human life . The second, is that if a robot should do something so terrible,  there is no one to hold accountable or responsible . This lack of accountability is disrespectful to the enemy and rules of war. Like pledging beforehand that there will be no punishment for soldiers breaking the law. However,  should a robot be developed that is perfect- always killing the right person-  minimizing the amount of harm necessary to complete the task,  so why not? Should such machines not be d

30+ Powerful Artificial Intelligence Examples you Need to Know

Artificial Intelligence (AI) may look like something out of the pages of a sci-fi book, yet you’d be surprised how often you use it daily. As the technology continues to improve, AI will become even more common with more widespread utilization among diverse industries. To start with, let’s begin with the basic definition of  Artificial Intelligence (AI)  and what it includes. Seeking Alpha gives a very apt description of the same in their article- At a basic level, artificial intelligence is the concept of machines accomplishing tasks which have historically required human intelligence. AI can be broken down into two distinct fields: Applied AI: Machines designed to complete very specifics tasks like navigating a vehicle, trading stocks, or playing chess – as IBM’s Deep Blue demonstrated in 1996 when it defeated chess grand master Gerry Kasparov. General AI: Machines designed to complete any task which would normally require human intervention. The broad nature of General A

Building Interactive Websites using Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) – [With Examples]

Adobe’s Flash was a pathbreaking technology for creating inspiring and interactive experiences on the web. While the technology faded away, with the ever-increasing demand to build greater interactive and lighter animations, SVG has started to fulfill the need tremendously. In this blog, we take you through some aspects on why SVG or Scalable Vector Graphics is here to stay and how designer and developers can take advantage of this technology. Why you should use SVG graphics on your website? When it comes to adding images to your website, you either choose raster or vector. A raster image is typically a photo made up of pixels with a set resolution. It loses quality when scaled up and can appear grainy. Meanwhile, a vector image is made using lines, points and shapes. You can use it to any size without losing quality, but such images are restricted to how much detail they can represent- so they are best used for elements like icons, logos and illustrations etc. “All the seg

Why AI cannot takeover humans

There has been a lot of uproar in the media regarding AI overtaking human jobs and creating gross imbalance regarding employment. Much of it though, is due to ignorance. There is no denying AI does pose a threat, but humans are equipped enough to scale the obstacles. Like with the introduction of computers and automation (that created sensationalist fear of increased unemployment), disruptive technologies like  AI and Blockchain  has caused the same amount of hubbub. The problem with disruptive technologies is not the technology itself or its potential. The pain point rests at on one factor –  education . Do institutions today sincerely show the potential of AI? If AI can beat you at something you are training yourself for 4 years, are you setting yourself for a dim future? The answer? A resounding NO.  AI is capable of great things , but it is not capable of original thought. It can refurbish old stories to make a new one, but it cannot create a fresh and original stor

Why we should fear the imminent prevalence of facial recognition technology

Big Brother is watching. 70 years ago, this was a popular fiction book regarding the  dystopian future of human societies , governments and mass surveillance etc. As technology develops, its pervasiveness makes Orwell’s fiction to today’s reality. There have been many debates against facial recognition technology regarding its enabling of abuse and other corrosive activities like facilitation of violence and harassment, disproportionate impact on POC and vulnerable population, misuse by authorities, denial of essential rights such as  “as protection against “arbitrary government tracking of one’s movements, habits, relationships, interests, and thoughts” etc. However,  there are more reasons why we should fear facial recognition technology . Faces are hard to hide or change. They cannot be encrypted like an email or a text- they are just distantly capture-able from remote cameras and increasingly easy and inexpensive to obtain and store in the cloud- a feature that in itse
